The osmize are a unique tradition of the Karst plateau between Italy and Slovenia: they are not “classic” restaurants, but simple and authentic places where producers serve wine and local products (cured meats, cheeses, bread…), often for just a few days and in varying periods, because they depend on what is available from production.

How to recognize them

When an osmiza is open, tradition calls for “rustic” signs along the road: you’ll often find indications and symbols linked to the frasca/branch (ivy is used in many areas).

What to expect

  • Long communal tables, a family atmosphere, nothing fancy: that’s exactly the charm.
  • “Local” menu: typically ready-made, home-produced items, with limited quantities.

Practical tips (to do it right)

  • Check opening times before you go: osmize do not all follow the same fixed calendar; it’s often best to check local notices.
  • How to get there: it’s usually easier by car (Karst/plateau), but it depends on the individual osmiza.
  • Duration: 1.5–2.5 hours (relaxed tasting).
